Experiment No . 1 ( B.Sc. 5th Semester Physics Project file )

                             Experiment No. 1 bsc.5th semester

(To determine the specific rotation of sugar water solution with the help of Polarimeter.)

Object

To determine the specific rotation of sugar water solution with the help of Polarimeter.

Material required

Laurent’s half shade polarimeter, prepared solution of cane sugar dissolved in water , sodium lamp , balance weight box , beaker , graduated cylinder tunnel , pipette , glass road , filter paper .

Formula

Least count = Value of smallest division in main scale / total division in verniar scale

LC = 1 ͦ= 1 ͦ/10 = 0.1 ͦ x 60 minute = 6 minute

Least count = 6 minute

1.      Mass of sugar cube = 8gm

2.      Volume of the solution = 100 ml

3.      Concentration of solution M/V = 0.08 gm/cc

4.      Length of polarimeter tube = 2 Decimeter

5.      Room temperature = 27  ͦ C

Total reading = main scale reading + vernier scale reading x least, count

Specific rotation = θ x volume of solution /Sugar mass x length of polarimeter

                                    = 10.5x100/8x8

                                    = 65.625

                                    = 65.62 Degree/dm/gm/cc

Result

            The specific rotation of cane , sugar solution at temperature t ( 25  ͦ c ) for sodium light (wavelength λ = 5893 Aͦ) is found to be 65.62 degree / dm / cc .

Sources of error and precautions

1.      The position for equal, darkness of the field should be carefully adjusted .

2.      Solutions of uniform concentration should be obtained by through mixing  .
