Experiment No. 6
Object
To
determine the coefficient of viscosity of η of water by paiseuille’s method.
Apparatus used
A
constant level , water wire faited on bord a means meter a capillary tube ,stop
watch , a measuring cylinder and meter scale.
Formula used
The
coefficient of viscosity of liquid is given by –
η
= πpr⁴/8vl
where , p
= h.p.g = pressure
p
= π (hpg) r⁴/8vl
where ,
r
= radius of capillary tube
l
= length of capillary tube.
V
= volume of water collected per second.
P
= dencity of liquid.
H = different of liquid level in the means meter.

Diameter of the capillary tube = 0.16275 cm
Radius of capillary tube = 0.081375 cm
Volume per second (v/s) = 0.193 ml/sec
. h = 3.1 cm
Result
The
coefficient of viscosity of water is 7.8526x10⁻³ dyne- sec / cm²
Precautions and source of error
1.
The radius of capillary should be
measured very carefully.
2.
The capillary should be placed
horizantelly to avaid the effect of gravity.
3. The temperature of water should be noted very carefully.
