                                        Experiment No. 1

Object

            To determine the moment of inertia of flywheel about its own axis of rotation.

Apparatus Required

                        Flywheel , meter scale , vernier , callipers , stopwatch , sut of waits a thread.

Formula Used

                   The moment of Inertia I of the flywheel is given by – 



Where , m is the mass of suspendet rod at the end of string , r is radius of suspendet rod & n1 is number of revolutions mode b the wheel before the mass is detached from the wheel & n2 is number of revolution mode by the flywheel to come to rest after the mass is detached & t is time taken by the wheel in n2 revolutions & g is acceleration due to gravity , r is radius of suspendet rod .

                    From the observation table -

. m = 350 gm = 0.350 kg Radius of the axis = 0.0102m G = 9.8 m/sec2 , .n1 = 5 , n2 = 8 , t = 94 sec.

Sources of error & Precautions

  •  There should be uniform winding en the axle .
  • 2.      The string loop should be loose.
  • 3.      Friction should be made small by ball bearings .
  • 4.      The diameter of the axle should be majored at various points .
  • 5.      Mass should fall freely.
  • 6.      Mass must start with zero velocity.
